　1975年にKrumhanslとSchrieffer c 1) が共著の論文を書いた。ある擬一次元系ではソリトンが多体系の素励起であり熱的性質を統計力学によって計算するときにその要素の一部として使えることが示された。彼らが用いたのはが系として知られている模型であった。固体物理でソリトンという概念が有効で重要であることを示した最初の仕事といえよう。ソリトン自体は1834年にRussellによって運河の水の波動として発見されたことがよく知られている。まっすぐな運河を馬に引かれた船が登ってきて船着場に着いたのを眺めていると、止まった船からひとかたまりの波動が出て運河の先のほうへ動いていった。それを馬に乗って追いかけていったら、波動は少しも崩れずどこまでも伝わったが、やがて運河が曲がったところで消えた。普通、波動は進む方向の前後にある程度広がっているものだがこの波動はむしろ塊になっている。また普通の波動のようにすぐ形が変わって平らにならずいつまでも安定に形を保っている。こんな波動の存在を科学的に説明できるかどうかが当時の流体力学研究者の話題になった。そして流体力学の基本式からKdV (Korteweg -de Vries) 方程式が導き出されて、波動の存在を説明できることが分かったのである。

 

It is well known that scientific research works have aphenomenon similar to that in the community of fashiondesigners. One day, a particular problem is enormously popularand many people join to explore the problem and try to clarifyevery puzzle it has. The other day, a new problem becomes sopopular and everybody looks to work in the new problem. Wesometimes find that the old problem is not necessarily solved.People have just forgot it. We had one or two decades whensolitons were so popular in the solid state physics. They wereextensively studied theoretically as well as experimentally withexciting discoveries and illuminating discussions. We shall seeit with a soliton whose existence is most reliably established insolids. It is in a conducting polymer called polyacetylene,described by (CH)x. Results of ESR, dynamic nuclearpolarization, and NMR suggested that the soliton 1s moremobile at higher temperatures. Its diffusion constant wasobserved to be proportional to T 2 at low temperatures. The T2dependence was claimed similar to that obtained theoreticallyin 1978. The similarity was, unfortunately, accidental. In spiteof extensive works thereafter, the temperature dependence isstill unexplained and many questions remain widely open.Presumably, many important unsolved problems remain allover the fields of physics, being forgot by people. Let us hopethat they will revive sometime to become fashionable again, aswe see very often in the world of fashion industry.
