-The provenance, creation-age and relations with the sculptures of
Virgin Mary of Lourdes—

This is a report on the so-called Maria-Kannon that
designated cultural property in Morioka-Shi Iwate-Ken.
At 2013~2014, Board of Education of Morioka was
takeover the research about its provenance and creationage
and we followed them. The crest on the case and the
iconography of the Lady Mary suggest that this was made
in Lourdes, the famous holy place of pilgrimage in southwestern
France. In other words, this small sculpture
(bronze) is not a “Maria-Kannon” made in Japan but the
“immaculate conception” of Christian doctrines, socalled
“Virgin Mary of Lourdes”. However we could not
clearly say the creation-age, it should be dated to about
late 19th century and was made as one of the souvenirs
of the pilgrimages. So it is very important that this Lady
Mary from south-western France has kept over a hundred
years secretly in Buddhist temple, Shouju-ji, the family
temple of Nanbu-clan, from the historical point of view,
of the Christian mission and establishment of Christianity
in Morioka-Shi.
