Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Seki
City in Gifu Pref., where is renowned for the
Sword Festival, and observed the traditional
workshop of a swordsmith. We hear that the
Japanese craftsmen obtained their skill by hands
and ears as they imitate their master craftsmens’
skill, working under them for many years. I
imagine that it must have been so hard as they
would stake their lives on the job. To produce the
swords displayed there with such awesomeness
and severity, equivalent determination and effort
would be needed. But the young apprentices I met
there were pretty simpleminded; they used mobile
phones and talked to me very friendly. I guess
there are changes by times and the relationship
between masters and apprentices are updated.

There must be a lot of patterns and situations
in each background to try to hand down the
skill one has mastered. The technology that
I’m engaged in here has become the foundation
technology for the systems and almost been
completely under the surface, but inevitable when
to develop some special equipments or to self-
build up a system from zero. The young technical
experts who try to master such technology tend to
enter the subdivided engineering fields.

To use the system for self-expression in the
world of art is still a fresh and young stream.
Today, there are a lot of intelligent equipments
available for the expression of art out there such
as PCs, projectors, moblile phones; which get us
lost about the choice. It seems as if it is full of
possibility for free expression with lots of ways to
interact with each other.

But, in such a situation, because the system has
a similar operation specification and it acts the
same way whoever uses it, when one tries to show
his spirituality or individual character, expression
tends to become applications of the equipments,
not production, apart from its original purpose.

Just as the press machines or the grinders
cannot produce the Japanese swords, the artist
is expected as much as possible to engage in
her expression from the roots of its production.
“As much as possible,” because technologies are
chosen and raised by people of the time.

I was blessed with the students with quality
and talent to join in the practice this year, so I
had the opportunities for personal production of
the digital system and the system production to
gather the whole in the practice. This is the report
on the contents of their work and the fruits from
them.
