-Focusing on the Skyphos in the Louvre Museum (Louvre G372)-

Last year, an exhibition of Ancient Greek
Art from the Louvre Museum was held at
The University Art Museum, Tokyo National
University of Fine Arts and Music (June 17 –
August 20, 2006). Of the Louvre’s collection of over
350,000 works, 134 works from the Department
of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities
were displayed. The Attic red -figure skyphos
by the Penelope Painter (Louvre G372, Fig. I)
who was active in Greece around 450ー400BC,
which is discussed in this paper, was one of the
works in the collection. Called “The Building of
the Acropolis”, the skyphos depicts the goddess
Athena and a giant named Gigas on side A and
two male figures on side B. The figures on both
sides are spaciously arranged, with fine lines
expressing the details of their faces and muscles.
Robert D. Cromey argues many issues
surrounding this work in a paper he presented
in 1991, but, to my knowledge, no paper has
been written since then that discusses this
skyphos or that focuses on the Penelope Painter
and his works. In this paper, I will consider the
characteristics and styles of his work which
have yet to be addressed independently, based
on Cromey’s study, and attempt to position this
skyphos in his entire works. In particular, I
will compare the style that links the themes of
side A and side B, which was also pointed out
by Cromey as a feature of his work, with that
of the Lewis Painter, a noted skyphos painter
from a slightly earlier period. The two are
said to have been master and pupil, and I will
consider the influence of the Lewis Painter on
the works of the Penelope Painter, especially
this skyphos, from a comparison of their
styles. Using data from internet search sites
including the Beazley Archive, I have classified
the works of the Penelope Painter according to
the degree of background decoration. Based on
this classification, I will attempt to position the
skyphos in his entire works.
