Circumstances of the Production of the Painting of “Hahacho” by Sesson

YAMADA lsao

Sesson Shukei is known as one of the most
important painters of the Muromachi Era. Today
about 200 paintings have been confirmed as
his work by scholars, but as a Suiboku painter,
neither his wandering life of visiting Odawara,
Kamakura and Aizu, nor the year of his birth and
death is known. There are two inscriptions on
Sesson’s works by Keisho Shuzui, a Zen Priest of
Engaku-ji Temple.
In this article, the author examines these
inscriptions on Sesson’s works by Keisho Shuzui,
especially in the case of the painting of “Hahacho”,
and introduces the fragments of his documents in
the 16th century, the so-called Sengoku Period in
the Kanto district. He believes that these historical
fragments are very valuable for considering
Sesson’s life and works. The author also notes that
the production of Sesson’s works to be considered
in relation to various circumstances in the entire
history of Kanto suiboku paintings.
