戦国画人郷目貞繁試論
An Essay on the warrior painter Gounome Sadashige
in the Sengoku period of 16th century

Gounome Sadashige is known as one of the warrior
painters in Japanese Art History. The date of his birth
and death is both unknown. He left his life in Sagae in
Dewa (Yamagata) in the district of Tohoku and appeared
to isolated as a painter at that time. Gounome was taken
prisoner during five years in the war between the warrior
Date and Mogami’s followers in the Eisho period (1504-
1520). We know only his works dated of Kyoroku 2
(1529),Eiroku 1(1558), Eiroku 6(1563). He completed
some scrolls of landscape painting, birds and flowers and
figure painting of Buddhism, for example Shakyamuni
and Arhat (Rakan). He painted several works both in ink
paintings and pictures.
We consider the documents of his life, existing many
pictures, seals in his paintings and circumstances of his
activity.
We can also discover here the artistic styles in his
paintings and several subjects of warrior painting in the
later Muromachi Era.
Furthermore we consider his life and works through
the particular complicated circumstances of this district.
