Tsubaki Chinzan (1801-1854) is known as a painter
of Japanese Nanga school Painting (or Bunjinga, literati
painting) in the Edo period. He learnd painting from
Kaneko Kinryo and Watanabe Kazan. He completed
many scrolls of landscape painting, portraits, and birds
and flowers. Especially the painting of birds and flowers
is his strong point.
Chinzan traveled to Ashikaga in norrhan district of
Kanto from 11th to 28th in August Tenpo 13(1842). He
wrote a travel diaries with many sketches of ink and light
colors. This book consists of three parts, diaries, copies
of many paintings, and copies of copies by Yamamoto
Kinkoku.
He visited Ashikaga Gakko, Bannaji temple, Gyodosan,
and walked many places.
We can see his paintings and also those of his master
and friends of the same generation in Edo from this book.
We considerate several subjects of Japanese Nanga school
Painting in later Edo period from this book as documents
of painter and his age.
