ー《黒板》(東京藝術大学蔵)の成立過程とその意義をめぐって
On the “Blackboard” (1984, The National University of Fine Arts and
Music) by Joseph Beuys

山本和弘
YAMAOTO Kazuhiro

On 2 June 1984 Joseph Beuys (1921 -1986) had
a discussion with 1000 art students at The Tokyo
University of Fine Arts and Music. In the course
of the discussion Beuys drew diagram on the
blackboard [Fig.1]
This essay is to reveal what Beuys wanted to
appeal to Japan by the means of the analysis of
diagram-drawing.
When we see the words and graphs of the
diagram very closely, we can find a lot of profound
thought of Beuys. He tried to talk very kindly to
the art students who were already hardened as
sculptural material, so that he wanted to warm
them and feed the seed of “social sculpture”.
The blackboard is not only the introduction
of “social sculpture” but also to present a goal
of “the expanded concept of art” with his last
motto “Everybody is a King”, which was the
transformation of the famous motto “Everybody is
an Artist”.
