In recent years, as is commonly known,
drawing, craft, and art hours in school education
have been cutting back. As the consequence of this
reducing, children are very often to be educated
by packaged art kits through a catalog order
…to accomplish the effective and rapid result,
Yet in this controlled circumstances children
lose chances of touching and feeling heart of
naked natural materials such as logs with barks
or rough stones and seldom have opportunities
of experiencing pleasure and difficulty in art
creation. Is this situation around art education
really O.K? never. As Manabu Sato Sates the very
requisite for modern children is true art education
and experience which can gift outstanding
opportunities of encountering ‘another reality’,
‘another world’,’another self’ and ‘another being’.
Children need art as ‘the way of living’ now.
This consideration shows the remarkable fruits
which children accomplished in Sculpture Workshop
in Yonago Sculpture Symposium 2006, which I
joined in this summer, and analyzes the effects
which real art experience can bring to. Techniques,
pleasures, and fulfillment which children acquired
through plastic activities/art creation were the very
gates to another world…and also for me as an art
educator. Art blooms beyond age. Therefore it can
communicate with children.
