「チャン」についての考察　―西洋における樹脂活用との関係―
A Study of “Chan” -Relationship with the use of resin in the West-

　近年の研究により、社寺建築の分野で「チャン塗」と呼ばれる塗装技法が明らかとなっている。「チャン塗」は松脂と乾性油を混ぜた塗料とされるが、詳しい由来は不明な点が多い。樹脂と乾性油を混ぜた塗料は西洋でも古くから用いられている。そこで西洋での樹脂の活用との比較を通して「チャン」の由来や材料について考察を行った。その結果いくつかの疑問が明らかとなった。「チャン」という名称はテレビン（Pistacia terebinthus）の産地として知られた「キオス島の（Chian）」に由来するという説には一部誤解があることがわかった。キオス島に産する樹脂はマスティック（Pistacia lentiscus）である。マスティックは西洋では広くワニスなどに用いられた樹脂であるが、江戸時代の史料によれば「チャン」が松脂に関わるものであることは明らかである。西洋では様々な樹脂を用いた処方が存在するが、当時の日本では松脂に限定されていた。また、史料には松脂と油を混ぜる処方以外に木タールからピッチを製するものも「チャン」として記載さていた。松脂についても生松脂を使用したのか加工した松脂を使用したのか疑問である。そこで今回はロジンを使用して史料からチャンの処方を再現し、西洋の処方のうち松脂以外の樹脂を用いる処方との比較を行った。

Recent studies have revealed a painting technique called “chan-nuri” in the field of shrine and temple architecture. “Chan-nuri” is believed to be a paint that is mixture of pine resin and drying oil, but the exact origin of this paint is still unclear. Paints that are a mixture of resin and drying oil have been used in the West for a long time . Therefore, we considered its origin and materials of “Chan” through comparison with the use of resin in the West. As a result of our research, it was found that there is a misconception that the name “Chan” derives from “Chian”, which is known as origin of Pistacia terebinthus. Resin produced on Chios Island is mastic (Pistacia lentiscus), which is widely used for varnishes. While there are varnish recipes using various resins in the West, but resin used in Japan is limited to pine. In addition to the pine resin and oil mixtures,historical documents of the time also mention pitch made from wood tar described as Chan. In this study, we tried to make a paint using rosin and compared it with resin formulations in the West.
