デジタル木版画とオフセットによる印刷実験
Printing experimentation by digital xylography and offset

The aim of this experiment is to create image data capable of
being offset printed on paper through combining xylographic
techniques with the image processing features available in
Adobe Photoshop. Offset printing of xylographic images
normally involves performing four-color separation by
scanning a single complete work on a scanner. ln this
experiment, however,I printed the images of the different
xylographic blocks onto separate sheets of paper and scanned
them on a scanner. Using Photoshop,I then made the
background color transparent and used layers to merge the
image. This technique enabled me to do away with the whole
idea of the “subjectcopy” and overcome the color reproduction
problems normally encountered when printing the finished
image. This means that the colors of the image parts obtained by
scanning serve only as interim colors, making it possible to
create a variety of expression, including coloration featuring a
high degree of transparency not found in traditional
reproductions of xylographic blocks. These types of data
images capable of maintaining the texture and handmade feel of
traditional xylography are referred to in this dissertation as
“digital woodcuts.” Over the course of the study,I learned that
some suitable color creation techniques are required for image
data that is to be printed as a four color process job,and that
digital xylography is one of well-suited techniques.
