A Study of Remedial Education at Universities
-Based Upon the Attitude Survey of Learners at Tohoku University of Art and Design-

亀山博之 Hiroyuki KAMEYAMA

With the growing diversification of university entrance
examinations due to the decreasing birth rate in Japan,
the decline in the academic ability of university students
overall has been a troubling problem. This is why many
universities have been compelled to set up remedial
education courses. However, the content being taught is
not university level. The Ministry of Education even gave
a candid opinion that universities should at least avoid
teaching junior high school-level classes.
To be sure, remedial education as a countermeasure has
been considered essential for this particular condition.
But, is the academic ability level of university education
specified? Moreover, is there any guideline for properly
conducting remedial education at universities? By analyzing
the results of an attitude survey targeting students at
Tohoku University of Art and Design who were placed
in a remedial English course, we come to realize that remedial
education must include the aim and methodology
to nurture autonomous learners. Conversely, as long as
remedial education at universities is capable of cultivating
a learner with a self-reliant mind, it is still worthwhile,
notwithstanding its junior high school-level learning
contents. There is a great possibility for remedial education
to enable students to eventually achieve university
readiness.
