本稿は、奈良県桜井市多武峰に位置した談山神社（旧・多武峰妙楽寺）の子院、学頭竹林坊の建築空間をかつて構成していたとされる一連の金碧障壁画群を対象とする。これらの作品群は現在、大英博物館所蔵「秋冬花鳥図」、シアトル美術館所蔵「琴棋書画仙人図」、および青森県中泊町の宮越家所蔵「春景花鳥図」として日・英・米の3カ国に分蔵されている。先行研究において、図様の連続性からこれらが一具の障壁画であった可能性や、過去の解体修理に基づく表裏一体の関係が指摘されていたが、分蔵される3作品の物理的関係性を総合的に検証した研究はなされていなかった。本稿では、文化財保存修復学の視点から3カ国のコンサバターが連携し、料紙寸法の詳細な計測・比較、縁部材の構成照合、および旧下地と本紙に残存する焦げ痕の位置照合という3種類の物証に基づき、これらの分蔵作品がかつて同一空間を構成する一具の障壁画であった事実を実証的に裏付けた。さらに、各所蔵先に保管されていた過去の学芸情報および解体修理記録と新たな実測データを統合することで、大正から昭和期にかけての本作品群の離散・改変過程を再構築した。

This study examines a group of gold-leaf polychrome fusuma paintings formerly housed in the Gakutō Chikurinbō, a sub-temple of Tanzan Shrine (formerly Tōnomine Myōrakuji) in Sakurai, Nara Prefecture. The works are now dispersed across three countries: Birds and Flowers of Autumn and Winter at the British Museum, The Four Accomplishments and Immortal at the Seattle Art Museum, and Birds and Flowers of Spring in the Miyakoshi family collection in Nakadomari, Aomori Prefecture. While previous studies had suggested pictorial continuity among these works and a recto-verso relationship based on earlier remounting treatments, no comprehensive forensic verification encompassing all three dispersed works had been undertaken. Approaching the subject from a conservation perspective, conservators in the three countries collaborated to present three categories of physical evidence: detailed comparison of paper-sheet (ryōshi) dimensions, cross-examination of frame components revealing the deliberate interchange of lacquered frame members during the 1930s recto-verso separation, and positional matching of a scorch mark on the British Museum’s former substrate with a corresponding paper loss on the Seattle Art Museum painting surface. The results conclusively demonstrate that these dispersed works originally constituted a unified set of architectural paintings within the same architectural setting. Furthermore, by integrating curatorial records and past conservation documentation preserved by the respective holders with newly obtained measurement data, this study reconstructs the process of dispersal and alteration from the Taishō through the early Shōwa periods.
