Designing a Learning Environment for Citizenship Education
-Case study of Yamagata-Kita High School “Tosyokan-koza”-

滝口克典 Katsunori TAKIGUCHI

The purpose of this paper is to clarify a potential possibility
of a school library as public space, and to set it in
position as effective resources for a citizenship education.
This was performed on the basis of a case study by a
fieldwork in Yamagata-Kita High School “Toshokan-koza
(the meeting called Library workshop)”. There is a unique
education practice performed. It is such a practice that
makes high school students master one’s citizenship or
makes them acquire a motive for it through participation
of students into the public space which a school library/
librarian holds. Finally, on the basis of some suggestions
obtained by the above case study, I have tried to develop a
tentative scheme about what kind of citizenship education
practice based on the functions which a school library/
librarian could accomplish is possible, and what the terms
or conditions for it are in our future society.
