Many people have only a shallow understanding
of the concept ‘gender,’ or it has been distorted to
further some purpose. This paper, in the process of
presenting a true ‘gender-free’ redressing of some
misunderstandings, tries to show what the gender
education here at Tohoku University of Art and
Design has brought to the students by focusing on
their responses to the class.
‘Gender’ does not simply remain within the
negation of the unnatural and unequal dichotomy of
both sexes. Affirming oneself can be born from the
attitude of understanding others, which then leads to
the positive thinking regarding his/her own life and
sexuality. In this process the author can find a
meaning of liberal studies, and what’s more can
present a practical example of the training of
‘thinking.’
