「肘折山水」をめぐって
Aroud the “Hijiori landscape”

三瀬夏之介
MISE Natsunosuke

In the folding screen “Hijiori fantasy,”
Natsunosuke Mise painted eruption of a volcano
20,000 years ago, which is the origin of Hijiori. An
interesting link with a scene of Japan originating
from his hometown of Nara (=Yamato) can be
seen.
Mise has painted the “Kikei” which is over 30
meters long,” The Theory of destruction NIHON-GA,”
and “The Theory of Restoration NIHON-GA,”
searching for the condition of Japan in Japanese
style painting. The scenes of Japan such as Mt.
Fuji, the Great Buddha and five story-pagoda
painted by Mise include the present and the past
intertwined with each other, and it seemed that
the pictures were going to expand infinitely to
deliver the images to contemporary art scene.
The “Hijiori fantasy,” however, has closed
thoughtfulness attached thereto like a drop
curtain closing quietly. The mountains are
moving stickily in ink painting which has unseen
darkness, and steam including volcano heat has
obscured the outline of the mountains.
Mise has moved to Yamagata prefecture and
has been working on paintings with the question
of “Is the Tohoku style painting possible?” He
is preparing to shake Japan in Japanese style
painting from the Tohoku district.
