Artwork that can Portray the Coexistence of Nature and People at a Certain Land
─ Creating artwork through regional research ─

この現代に芸術が何を成し得るのか。東北に根を降ろし、現象学や考古学的アプローチから「場所」の持つ意味を再解釈し、作品制作をしていく。ここ数年で、山形の風土がもつ神秘性に導かれるように自然発生的な、特殊な制作スタイルが確立し、コレクティブ化してきている。
中央都市の目紛しく享楽的な景観とは対照的に、山形は季節や気候で毎日景色が変わり、日々を過ごす人々に、個の存在や意識の儚さを教えてくれる。厳しく雄大な自然は、為す術もないことや、受け入れるべきことを優しくも残酷に突きつける。自然とともにある信仰も脈々と生まれ死んでいく自然と一体になることで、何か忘れていた生命感覚を取り戻せる。ここ東北の文化や自然は、訪れて体感することでしか知りえない沢山の魅力的な事柄に溢れている。今この土地で生活し、生きることのリアリティを見つめ、様々なフィールドワークやリサーチを行いながら絵を描くことの意味を考え、地域アートやサイトスペシフィックの次の段階として、「場所」が持つ共通性や特異性を抽出し、作品制作の中で紐解いていきたい。

What can art accomplish in this day and age? In the
land of Tohoku, artwork is being created by reinterpreting
the meaning of “place” form phenomenological and archeological
approach. A certain spontaneous unique production
style guided by the mysterious climate of
Yamagata is being established in recent years, and this
style is now becoming a collective phenomenon.
In contrast to the bewildering and pleasure-seeking scene
of big cities, people living in Yamagata are being taught
daily about the meaning and evanescence of individual
existence through the season and weather that changes on
daily basis. This harsh and magnificent natural environment
reminds the locals about human frailty and sheer
force of nature in a gentle yet cruel ways. When various
human belief systems finally become whole with the nature
by going through the circle of life, it is only then that
humans can regain the awareness toward life force that
they have forgotten. Tohoku is filled with various attractive
cultural and nature-oriented experiences that people
can only experience by visiting the actual land.
I would like to see artists define what it means to draw a
picture, by engaging in various field work and research by
focusing on the reality of living in this land on this day
and age. In doing so, it is my hope that these artists can
untie their creative flow in their production process, by
being able to extract commonness and idiosyncrasy specific
to a certain “place”, and take the regional art and
“site-specific” concept to the next level.
