ニューヨーク近代美術館(1929年開館)、東京国立

This paper outlines the establishment of three museums
of modern art founded in the early 20th century, and the
art history stated in the museums. I refer to the studies of
recent years that have political and social perspectives in
related fields.
I examine characteristic collection exhibitions and special
exhibitions held in the three museums: The Museum
of Modern Art at New York (founded in 1929), The National
Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, (founded in
1952), and Tate Modern (founded in 2000) in the chorological
order of the foundation years of the institutions.
The narrative of modern art, which spread from The Museum
of Modern Art at New York in the early 20th century,
influenced the establishment of The National Museum
of Modern Art, Tokyo under the international
situation of the Cold War. After the 1990s when Tate
Modern was founded, globalization was in progress, and
the narrative of modern art was questioned thus the
meaning of art museums changed. I would like to prove
that our perspective on modernity can be questioned by
examining the changes of “museums of modern art.”
