This report describes the program of the past twelve
years since the establishment of The Tohoku University
of Art and Design(TUAD),with examples
from the author’s experience of teaching conservation
and restoration of classical sculptures reflecting
cultural changes starting with Buddhist images.
The auther’s ongoing philosophy at TUAD,is firstly
to develop and train conservators capable of the
combination of practical technical skills with a
theorical approach, and secondly to continue to raise
public awareness of this area.
To achieve the first, working with the many external
opportunities for conservation projects,students
are required to analyse and produce detailed reports
on the current status of object before they start any
treatment.
The second aim has had limiteds success so far,the
main problem has been the limited public appeal of
specific Buddhist images. In addition, people working
in conservation have tended to be isolated from
responsibility to local communities.
This report also examines how we can develop our
culture in society, including the raising of public
awareness of the importance of conservation andrestoration.
