It is well known that there is some brown material
adhesive on the potteries used in the eighth to ninth
centuries. As for this brown adhesion，KAKI-SHIBU
was mentioned as one of the possibilities. In this
research，th e adhesion was investigated with microscope
and FT-IR，and compared with URUSHI.
As a result，the brown adhesion excavated from the
Imazuka-site，Yamagata was not identified as
KAKI-SHIBU. The adhesion has various types in
archaeological research. It is concluded that in the
investigation of characteristic properties of adhesions
on pottery，a scientific analysis is amust.
