A Study on the traditional pattern corresponding to the Japanese Aesthetic concept
-Building up of an image-corresponding-type pattern database-
The study is aimed to regenerate Japanese-oriented
aesthetic concept.In this experiment，the age-old Japanese
traditional patterns are subjected to evaluation for the modern
ages by means of archaic words comprehensible enough for the
Thus it is observed how the taditional aesthetic concept has
been inherited.Concurrently with this，it was found that change
in size of the typical patterns also resulted in a difference in
Impression noted by the test subject viewer. As a result, it is
explained that archaic words have many nuances.
It is furthermore explained that especially with the archac
words，”kiyora (clean)” “konomashi (favorable)”, “kok-
oronikushi (graceful)”， “wabi (tasteful)” ，and “yukan(brave)”,
rather drastic distribution was noted in the viewers’ responses.
However with the other archaic words，such as，”iki(smart)”，
“miyabi (elegant)”, which are habitually used in the modern age
as well，responses were relatively uniform indicating that the
images or interpretation of these words have remained
unchanged from their ancient usage. The final target of this
study is to build up a database of the traditional patterns
available enough for practical use corresponding to a variety of
the Japanese-oriented image.
