ジェンダー史研究
ー第二次世界大戦後の「野球」と日本人男性の「男性性」一
A Study of Gender History
-Baseball and the Masculinity of Japanese Men after World War II-

山口=内田雅克 YAMAGUCHI=UCHIDA Masakatsu

Was baseball, as one thought, just the symbol of peace,
hope, and democracy?
Immediately after the end of World War II, men who
had enjoyed baseball before it became prohibited because
of the war steadily began to promote the revival of the
game under the occupation of the Allied Forces. Among
the men promoting baseball were the leading men in amateur
and professional baseball, and the men in General
Headquarters (GHQ), including a Japanese American. In
the process of the revival, which was supported by such
media as baseball magazines and the education policy of
the Ministry of Education and GHQ, ideologues such
as TOBITA Suishu, praised the beauty and pureness of
young baseball players, and expressed the expectation
that the reestablishment of the Japanese nation could be
entrusted to such boys. Some were seeking the realization
of a friendly baseball game to try to establish an equal
relationship between Japan and America. A Japanese
American in GHQ, Cappy Harada, feeling the pride of
the Japanese, was deeply moved by the sight of the Rising
Sun flag flying in the stadium.
The author finds the common core among them, that
is, ‘They commit the task of restoring the masculinity of
Japanese men to baseball.’
