Consideration on the costume of the figures on the Parthenon Frieze
-the costume of the horsemen –

The great variety of the costumes of the figures on the
Parthenon Frieze constitutes a conspicuous feature which many
scholors point out. In recent years, there are remarkable
tendencies and attempts to interprete the representation of this
frieze by finding out some regularity and the particular
significance of the costumes within their variety. Among these
attempts stands out Evelyn B.Harrison’s interpretation that the
cavalcade of the south frieze could be divided through the
costumes into ten ranks of six horsemen according to the Attic
10 tribes and that they might be uniformly dressed within their
ranks.
As a member of the Parthenon Project of Japan 1994~1996
whose aim is art historical survey on the building policy of
Parthenon with the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Reseach,
Monbusho(representative of this project is Professor Akira
Mizuta), I researched the costumes of the figures on the
Parthenon Frieze, observing each slab in detail with my own
eyes, making notes ofit and photographing in order to establish
its description as precise as possible. This research took place in
London(the British Museum), in Athens (the Acropolis
Museum) and in Basel (Skulpture Halle).
In this paper,I took only the costumes of the horsemen of
the west, north and south friezes and attempted to analyse them
basing on the result of my observation on the spot and the
precedent studies (especially, F.Brommer,Der Parthenonfries,
Mainz, 1997; E.Berger & M.Gisler-Huwiler, Der Parthenon in
Basel Dokumentation, Mainz,1996). As the method of their
analysis I classified them into seven types ((①nude type ②only
chiton type ③exomis and chlamys type ④chiton and chlarnys
type ⑤chiton and animal skin type ⑥body cuirass type ⑦
cuirass with shoulder straps type) finding the clue from
Harrison’s classification of the horsemen’s costumes of the
south frieze. I made clear the features of the horsemen’s
costumes of each frieze within these types making their list and
showed that Harrison’s classification as mentioned above was
not always precise. It seems to me agreeable that exists the
contrast between the horsemen of the north frieze and those of
the south frieze, but what sense has this contrast is the problem
to solve in future for me.
