A practice study of a sculpture in a marble studio

The author stayed in Italy during two years
as an Agency for Cultural Affairs abroad
training member. It belonged to the marble
studio of Pietrasanta, and the current states of
the sculpture expression in the marble studio
and the actual condition of the technique were
investigated for the period. In our country, the
sculpture made from a sedimentary rock, igneous
rock, etc. has been built. There was little quantity
of output of marble and a technique original
with marble sculpture did not exist. Sculpture
technique is individual and a sculptor’s techniques
are made secret in many cases. Therefore, a
description systematic in reference data is not
found.
The contents about stone-carving expression
and its technique are the contents which
occupy an important position, and should be
deeply studied and verified from now on when
considering sculpture work, appreciation, and
specialized education. The environment of
marble sculpture, and the actual condition of the
expression method it considers from the viewpoint
of being a marble studio.
An author wants to consider the possibility
and the mode of expression of stone sculpture
continuously from the sculptor’s position in the
future.
