Lecture and Workshop Report :The Tear-Repair-Technique of
Painting Conservation

Last year，Tohoku University of Art and Design
invited Professor Winfried Heiber of Hochschule fur
Bildende Kunste Dresden，in Germany，to give a
lecture and workshop introducing his so-called Tear-
Repair-Technique，an innovative method for treating
torn canvas paintings.This report describes the
event，which was held from September 25 to 29，
2001，and marked the technique’s first-ever introduction
in Japan. The lecture portion was open to
the public as well as to students.
Professor Heiber mainly specializes in the conservation
and restoration of easel paintings on canvas.
He has been an opinion leader in his field in
Germany and his method is based as strictly as
possible on the principle of respecting a painting’s
aesthetic，historic and physical integrity.
One of his important achievements over the past
twenty years has been the Tear-Repair-Technique.
The theory behind the technique and a number of
concrete case studies were introduced during the
lecture，which spanned two days and included about
500 slides.In the workshop，participants first
watched demonstrations and then practiced performing
treatments themselves under the guidance
of Professor Winfried Heiber and his co-researcher，
Ms. Petra Demuth.
