An Inquiry into Perceptual Qualia and Aesthetic Qualia Based on the Higher-Order Representational Theory of Consciousness

本論文の目的は、そのタイトルが示すように、意識の高階表象理論に依拠して知覚的クオリアと美的クオリアについて考察することにあるが、ここではとりわけ両クオリアの成立機序を解明するとともに、それをとおして両クオリアの関係を解明することに焦点が置かれる。意識の高階表象理論一般は、大きく高階知覚理論と高階思考理論とに二分されるが、前者にあっては、ある心的状態を意識的なものとする高階表象を知覚に類した状態と解するのに対し、後者にあっては、それを概念的な思考、すなわちある種の概念的成分を含んだ認知的状態であると考える。本論文ではまず、これらの理論についてその基本的理論構制を批判的に再構成するとともに、高階表象理論一般との関係において、内観の論理構造を明らかとし「自己意識の問題」について論ずる。ついでそこで得られた知見をもとに、知覚的クオリアと美的クオリアの成立機序の解明にあたるとともに、知覚的クオリアと美的クオリアとの関係について考察をおこなう。そして最後に、美的クオリアの成立条件と非成立条件を呈示することにする。

The purpose of this paper is to consider the perceptual qualia and aesthetic qualia based on the higher-order representational theory of consciousness, as its title shows, and here the primary focus is put on the elucidation of their occurrence mechanisms and thereby of the relation of both qualia. The higher-order representational theory of consciousness in general is mainly classified into the higher-order perception theory and the higher-order thought theory. While the former regards the higher-order representations, which make mental states conscious ones, as perceptual states of some kind, the latter regards them as conceptual thoughts, i.e., cognitive states containing some kind of conceptual components. Firstly, in this paper, I will critically reconstruct the fundamental theoretical structures of these theories, and then make clear the logical structure of introspection and deal with the “problem of self-consciousness” in relation to the higher-order representational theory in general. Secondly, based on the results acquired through such a task, I will elucidate the occurrence mechanisms of perceptual qualia and aesthetic qualia, and consider the relation between them. And finally, I will present the occurrence conditions and the non-occurrence conditions for aesthetic qualia.
