ワラグツの「民芸品」化の過程に関する一考察
― 旧山形県西置賜郡東根村浅立のワラグツを事例として ―

白鷹町歴史民俗資料館には同町浅立地区で作られたと推測されるワラグツが収蔵されている。それらのワラグツと同型のものは白鷹町全域で作られていたと考えられるが、とりわけ浅立地区で多く生産されていたものである。
ワラグツは冬季農閑期に作られ、この地域にゴム長靴が広く普及するまで、冬期の日常的な自家用履物として使われていた。それだけでなく、米沢など置賜地域の町場に運ばれて販売され、貴重な現金収入源ともなっていた。
また、このワラグツは大正年間になると全国の物産展などに出品され、都会地では観賞用のワラグツとして注目されるようになっていった。とりわけ、柳宗悦の創始した民芸運動が盛んになると、このワラグツは「民芸品」としての評価を高めていった。柳宗悦が昭和15年（1940）前後の日本の手仕事の状況を記した『手仕事の日本』に取り上げられる事により、「民芸品」としての評価は決定的になった。
本稿では、このワラグツが日用品から「民芸品」化してゆく過程を追い、そこに働く要因について考察することとする。

he Shirataka Town History and Folklore Museum has a collection of several straw boots. It seems that those straws are made by the people of Shirataka Town. Especially in Asadachi, Shirataka Town, people made a lot of straw boots.
People in the Asadachi area made straw boots during the winter when farming was not possible. People in snowy countries wore straw boots on a daily basis during the winter. People in the Asadachi area continued to make straw boots until many in the snowy country began to wear rubber boots instead of straw boots. People carried straw boots to urban areas in Okitama-gun, such as Yonezawa, and sold them, earning a lot of living expenses.
In the 1910s, Asadachi people exhibited straw boots at local fairs and national product exhibitions. So straw boots became popular with people as an appreciation item. When “Mingei undo”, which makes folk crafts popular in Japan, became popular, straw boots made with Asadachi received high praise as “folk crafts”. Yanagi Muneyoshi covered Asadachi’s straw boots in a book called “Toshigoto no Nippon”. This ensured that Asadachi’s straw boots were recognized as “folk crafts”.
What I consider in this treatise is the process by which straw boots change from daily necessities to folk crafts and the factors that work there.
